The individuals listed below have agreed to support Student Rights by joining our External Advisory Board;
Rt Hon Denis MacShane MP
The Rt Hon Denis MacShane is Labour MP for Rotherham. In 2002 MacShane became the Minster of State for Europe but left in 2005. MacShane is a prominent public figure who champions action against anti-Semitism and the bias against Israel thorough work as the Chairman of the European Institute for the Study of Contemporary Anti-Semitism, a member of the All Party Group Against Anti-Semitism and as an advisory board member for ‘Just Journalism.’ He also writes for The Guardian.
Daniel Johnson
Daniel Johnson is the editor of Standpoint, a monthly political and cultural magazine. Launched in 2008, the magazine is dedicated to celebrating Western civilisation, its arts and its values, in particular democracy, debate and freedom of speech, at a time when they are under threat. Prior to this Johnson was a senior editor at both The Times and The Telegraph. He was the Literary Editor and the Comment Editor of the Times. He wrote foreign correspondence for the Telegraph and was also the Associate Editor.
Dr Alan Mendoza
Dr Alan Mendoza received his doctorate from Cambridge University where he also studied his undergraduate and Masters degree. He is currently the Executive Director of the Henry Jackson Society; a non-partisan think tank which aims to promote democratic geopolitics. The Henry Jackson Society advocates a positive approach to the spread of liberal democracy and supports Student Rights in this context. Additionally, Alan is a councillor for the London Borough of Brent.
Shiraz Maher
Shiraz is a journalist, broadcaster and Senior Fellow at Kings College London’s International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation. A former member of Hizb-ut-Tahrir, Shiraz is well versed in Islamist ideology and recruitment tactics in the United Kingdom and globally. Published widely and well respected across the counter-terror spectrum, Shiraz adds a level of knowledge to the Student Rights advisory board that could scarcely be found elsewhere.
Brian Brivati
Brian Brivati is the director of the John Smith Memorial Trust which is a cross party UK charity which is a memorial to John Smith, former leader of the Labour party. The John Smith Memorial Trust explores the values of democracy and social justice amongst others. Brivati is an expert in the field in human rights having run the Masters in Human Rights at Kingston University. Additionally, he had published articles on human rights in the Guardian, the Times, the Financial Times, the Independent on Sunday, the Observer, the New Statesman, Progress, the Fabian Review and Parliamentary Brief. He has published a variety of books on British politics, mainly on the British Labour Party.
Ben Ramm
Ben Ramm is the editor of The Liberal; a quarterly literary and political publication ‘devoted to promoting liberalism around the world’ which was launched in 2004. Ramm has written on the issues surrounding freedom of expression. Ramm once stated the The Liberal is determined to avoid any political affiliation and that the aim is to be explicitly partisan, without being party political.
