obj_pls_imageThis morning, Student Rights has learned that Hizb ut-Tahrir (HT) were to be welcomed onto the Queen Mary campus for an event entitled, “Shariah Law – compatible in the modern world?”   This event has now been cancelled.

HT are banned from most university campuses and also from NUS events. However, the Queen Mary Dialogue and Debate Society had invited Jamal Harwood (Head of Legal Affairs) and Reza Pankhurst to the university tonight.

Gabi Sibley, Research Director for Student Rights states, “It’s surprising to hear that in the wake of the cancelled Abu Usamah [radical anti-gay preacher] event recently at UCL, that such a controversial organisation which is no-platformed by the NUS was invited to speak on the campus in East London.”

Hizb-ut-Tahrir have been known to condone suicide bombings, and have stated, “All ways and means which a Muslim uses to kill unbelievers is permitted as long as the unbeliever is killed.” They have been described as the Islamic equivalent of the BNP and fresh from the Ed Ball’s “extremist schools” row owing to their racism and homophobic views. The student union society who invited these speakers was the Queen Mary Dialogue and Debate Society whose stated aims are to debate in cultural issues in relation to Islam. The facebook event page states that this event has now been cancelled however Queen Mary University are yet to put out a statement. Student Rights have learned that the university were not previously aware of this event.

Houriya Ahmed, Researcher at the Centre from Social Cohesion comments: “This is a test of QM’s commitment to stamp out extremism on its campus. It is wrong for a meeting with a clear balance of HT speakers to take place on a campus which has had a problem in the past. This meeting risks being a propaganda platform for HT and should not take place.”
