Kingston University Islamic Society host Uthman Lateef

Student Rights has learned that Kingston University Islamic Society will be holding their first event of the academic year this evening, a lecture entitled ‘The Muslim Student’.

The speaker at this event will be Uthman Lateef, the former Director of the Hittin Institute, who only this week was barred from speaking at an event at Nottingham Trent University on Sunday.

Given that Lateef was also refused permission to speak at London Metropolitan University in March, the fact that Kingston University Islamic Society feel he is an appropriate speaker is a concern.

Lateef claimed in 2009 that “...if we are teaching the way of life of the disbelievers, of the kuffar, Allah will bring humiliation upon us”.

He also stated that people should beware those advocating secularism as they “will sell you a democratic Islam, a socialist Islam, a social democratic Islam, every Islam except the Islam of Mohammed”.

He has also made openly homophobic comments, stating in 2007 that “we don’t accept homosexuality...we hate it because Allah hates it”.

Student Rights will be contacting Kingston University to enquire why Lateef was cleared to speak considering that responses of other universities to his invitation.
