Global Aspirations of Women Society suspended

Following our work in helping a student at the University of Manchester expose members of the Global Aspirations of Women Society supporting the execution of homosexuals, the Student Union has released a statement announcing that the society had been suspended and had disbanded.

The statement reads:

Following the incident at a meeting of the Global Aspirations of Women Society last week, the society was suspended from the union pending investigation and has now disbanded.

The Exec Team continue to take a zero tolerance approach to homophobia on campus. Our focus is now on taking action as a Students’ Union to prevent similar incidents in future.

We will complete our investigation into the circumstances that allowed these views to be expressed in our building, the conduct of the individuals responsible and will be taking appropriate action as a result”.

This certainly makes a welcome change from the original statement, in which concern was also raised over the manner in which the information was obtained.

It is also encouraging to see firm action taken against student societies which use meetings such as this to incite hatred, and we hope that other universities across the country will take note of this.
